A single overfed betta or fancy goldfish with a full belly, clean water, and intact skin is a constipation-path fish. Several tankmates listing in the same afternoon is not. One fish with ulcers, redness, or bloody streaks is not.
Clamped fins plus day-1 lethargy — hanging in one spot with no meal as the trigger — is an infection-path flag. Ammonia or nitrite above 0 ppm is also an infection-path flag even if the skin still looks clean, so test the main tank before you pick. Constipation-path first actions (do not start Kanaplex on these signs alone)
When the left column matches and the infection column does not, do not open an antibiotic on a single overfed fish.
- Isolate only if the fish cannot compete for space or you need to control what it eats. Constipation is not contagious, so a hospital tank is a feeding tool here, not a bio-security move.
- Start the existing Step 2–4 queue: a 2–3 day fast, then a cooked skinned pea or Hikari Bio-Pure Freeze Dried Daphnia at $8.98, then food-grade Epsom salt using the existing Step 4 table. Do not invent a new Epsom dose here.
